A few days ago I visited Sano Miso in Kameido, Tokyo for the first time.
Up until now, I have always bought miso at nearby supermarkets. When I heard that there was a shop that sells miso in bulk and allows customers to use their own containers, I knew I had to check it out!
With over 20 different kinds of miso, it was hard to decide which one to buy!
I decided on this one: “Edo-ama kuro.” You can choose to buy 300g, 500g, or 1kg. They don’t sell amounts under 300g, so be sure to bring a container that is big enough to hold at least that much! They do have plastic if all else fails, but let’s not use it if we can help it!
They have an eat-in space as well! They serve miso soup, yaki-musubi (grilled rice ball), etc. There were no other customers sitting down so we decided to give it a try and we were glad we did!
We ordered the set with veggies in our soup! We asked them if it was possible to get a vegan meal without any animal products and they were very accommodating. They used dashi from kombu and shiitake (seaweed and mushroom broth) and gave us extra vegetables instead of fish.
We were able to choose two types of miso for the base of the soup, and the yaki-musubi also came with a miso dip and two types of pickles (celery and daikon radish). There was even a side of dried blueberries which were really yummy.
Everything was delicious and we were very impressed with the food and the store itself. It’s about 1000 yen for a set like this one.
Although the store is rather far from our house (about 1.5 hours by bicycle), I would definitely like to go again! Next time I think I’ll bring a few containers so I can buy several types.
If you’re looking to buy miso in bulk or just taste some really delicious miso soup, I highly recommend taking a trip to this Tokyo miso store!
